Application for a Relative's Permit
A foreigner, who is a member of the
immediate family of a South African citizen or permanent resident, may be issued with a relative's
permit, provided that such citizen or permanent resident provides the prescribed financial
assurance.
The following documentation must be submitted in respect of each person applying
for a relative's permit:
A fully completed application form, including two (2) passport photographs (see Form BI-
1738);
A passport valid for no less than thirty (30) days after departure from the Republic of
South Africa, and containing at least two (2) blank pages for endorsements (non-Swedish
passports must contain a valid long term or permanent residence permit for Sweden);
Where the applicant is the spouse of a citizen or permanent resident, he/she shall submit
either:
A marriage certificate in the case of a married applicant; or
Proof of a permanent spousal relationship, in the case of so called life partners,
including:
The prescribed affidavit, which is available on request from our office;
Documentation proving cohabitation and the extent to which the related
financial responsibilities are shared by the parties;
Proof of a legal divorce or the death of a spouse in the event of a preceding
marriage; and
In the case of a relationship concluded between two foreigners in a foreign
country, official recognition thereof issued by the authorities of the relevant
country;
A police clearance certificate, issued by the police or security authority in each country
where the applicant resided for 12 months or longer since having attained the age of 18
years, in respect of criminal records or the character of the applicant, and this certificate
shall not be older than six (6) months at the time of its submission;
A medical report (see Form BI-811), which shall not be older than
six (6) months at the time of its submission;
Test results from medical examination;
A radiological report (see Form BI-806), which shall not be older than
six (6) months at the time of its submission, and shall not be required in respect of children under the age
of 12 years or pregnant women;
Result papers from radiological examination;
Payment of a cash deposit of SEK 8500, which shall be refunded to the applicant after his/her
final departure or after a permanent residence permit has been issued to the applicant
(not required in the case of a spouse or dependent minor child of a South African citizen
or permanent resident);
Proof of kinship between the applicant and the South African citizen or permanent
resident, by submitting unabridged birth certificates;
Proof of South African citizenship or permanent residence status of the applicant's
relative, by submitting a valid South African passport or foreign passport including the
permanent residence endorsement respectively;
Tthe financial assurance, which shall be an amount of R5.000,- per person per month to
be proven by means of a salary advice or bank statement (this financial assurance shall
not be applicable where the applicant is a spouse or dependent minor child of a South
African citizen or permanent resident);
A self-addressed A5-size envelope with postage paid for SEK 71 (registered mail), to
return the endorsed passport and personal original documents;
The non-refundable application fee of SEK 480 (this application fee shall not be applicable
where the applicant is a spouse or dependent minor child of a South African citizen or
permanent resident).
Payment of the above-mentioned application fee and cash deposit, if applicable, may be made
through an electronic bank transfer to the following account:

A copy of the transfer slip should be submitted together with application, as proof of payment.
Furthermore the cash deposit should be transferred separately from the application fee.
Note:
Relative's permits may not be issued for a period exceeding two (2) years.
The holder of a relative's permit may not conduct work in the Republic of South Africa.
Documentation that accompanies the application shall be original or certified copies and,
if applicable, translated by a sworn translator into English.
A complete application may be either mailed to our office, or submitted personally during
the consular opening hours: Mon-Tue, Thu-Fri; 09:00-12:30.
On condition that a complete application for a permit is submitted, the time required to
process the application is normally 15 working days. Please note however, that during
the high season (June-August & November-January), the processing of applications may
take longer.
Our office may only issue a permit within three (3) months before the applicant's intended
date of entry into the Republic of South Africa; we therefore kindly request that
applications are not submitted prior to this issuing period.
